Firefox Quirks

I decided to start this page to keep track of all the strange issues I encounter in Firefox, along with any solutions I find.

  • Fonts appearing too large

For some reason, this behavior would only manifest itself when viewing Twitter or someone’s Twitter profile.  The font sizes would be HUGE.  It wouldn’t happen all the time, but it did happen about 80% of the time.  Neither Google Chrome nor Internet Explorer 8 would behave this way.

A short-term fix (meaning, only as long as I had that tab open) was to go to View > Character Encoding and select one of the Western options. This wasn’t much help since it would go right back to Unicode as soon as I close that tab.

The permanent fix was to go to View > Character Encoding > Autodetect and change it from Off to Universal.  This seemed to fix the problem completely.

  • Alt + Keys

This seems to be completely random.  I’ll hit Alt + Home on my keyboard to open my home page and nothing happens.  Or I’ll use Alt + Left Arrow to go back a page and… nothing happens.  Then I’ll try a few minutes later and they’ll work again.  This is one problem I haven’t been able to fix, and I’ve seen it in every version of Firefox, even back when it was originally called Firebird.  If anyone has any ideas about this one, I’d be grateful.

Have any quirks to share? Let me know. I might be able to help you with them.  Email me at
